Catalytic Convertor Theft.

A catalytic converter is part of a vehicles exhaust system. Every petrol, diesel and hybrid vehicle has one.  It converts toxic gases produced by the combustion of fossil fuels into less-toxic pollutants. This is achieved by a chemical reaction in the convertor aided by the presence of precious metals (eg. platinum, palladium and rhodium).

Issue: The precious metals contained within in catalytic convertors are targeted by thieves who can jack-up your parked car and steal its convertor in 60-90 seconds. Replacement of the stolen convertor can cost thousands!

Got a Hybrid ? : Older petrol and diesel car convertors contain platinum however modern Hybrid cars are prime targets today - they use more valuable palladium and rhodium metals.

Why do I need to worry ?

Losing a convertor takes seconds rendering your vehicle unroadworthy and unusable.

Replacing a catalytic converter at a dealer using new genuine replacement can cost thousands!

Insurance can cover the loss, but you may need to pay claim excesses and face increased premiums in future.

What can I do to reduce risk?

Sadly the thieves are very brazen. They target cars on private drives, parked in side streets, main roads and even public car parks.

If possible:
  1. Park in a lock-up garage (if  you have one).
  2. Park in well lit areas at night
  3. Park in between cars to restrict jacking access in public car parks
  4. Park the side of your car with the convertor near a wall or fence to restrict jacking access.
  5. Do not park with two wheels up on kerb

What precautions can I buy ?

Ensure your car alarm has MOTION & IMPACT sensing - to detect when the car is being jacked up. If not, upgrade with a third-party alarm and fit STICKERS to warn the thieves.

Have an anti-theft cover fitted to your car's catalytic convertor. Many dealers & garages offer third-party protection covers - consult your dealer or search web for options for your car.

Have your convertor "security marked" with your VIN or REGISTRATION plate - criminals and dealers are so brazen so this is unlikely to prevent theft but it may enable a prosecution if thieves are caught by police.
